The Perseid meteor shower is one of the most reliable and visually impressive annual celestial events. Each August, Earth passes through debris from comet Swift-Tuttle, creating a spectacular display of shooting stars visible across the night sky. This 6-day astrophotography workshop will teach you techniques to capture these dramatic meteor streaks along with stars and the Milky Way.
We'll work from a designated dark sky location on Bodmin Moor, away from light pollution, where conditions are optimal for night sky photography. Whether you're a complete beginner or experienced photographer looking to expand into astrophotography, Dion will guide you through camera settings, composition, and post-processing techniques specific to night sky photography.

Daily Itinerary
Meet at our Bodmin Moor base on Tuesday afternoon. After settling in and a welcome briefing, Dion introduces the week, covering astrophotography fundamentals, the science of the Perseid shower, and the locations we'll be shooting across the five nights. As civil twilight fades we head out for a first session: practising focus, exposure, and composition techniques before the meteor rate builds toward the peak.
A dedicated night for Milky Way photography at our primary dark sky locations. Bodmin Moor's ancient standing stones, moorland pools, and rocky tors make excellent foregrounds against the galactic core. Dion covers exposure blending, foreground light painting, and sky-replacement compositing, building your toolkit for the meteor peak nights ahead. Meteor activity is already increasing at this point in the shower window.
The Perseid shower reaches its peak, typically 50–100+ meteors per hour under dark skies. We station ourselves at pre-scouted moorland locations and run multiple camera setups simultaneously: wide-angle meteor captures, targeted long-exposure stacks, and intervalometer sequences for star trails. Dion circulates to fine-tune each participant's settings in real time. Dawn breaks over the moor as we conclude our longest night of the tour.
A morning and afternoon devoted to editing, reviewing the peak night's images and working through the full astrophotography post-processing pipeline in Lightroom and Photoshop. Dion covers meteor trail enhancement, noise reduction, star stacking with Sequator or Starry Landscape Stacker, and final output sharpening. The second peak night follows after sunset: meteor rates remain high and we apply refined techniques from the editing session in the field.
With the peak behind us, this night is dedicated to creative exploration, star trail sequences, long light-painting sessions, and any techniques participants want to revisit or develop further. We move between locations across the moor as conditions and creativity dictate. Dion introduces advanced composition strategies: using water reflections, stone circles, and the natural contours of the landscape to build more arresting images.
A relaxed final morning reviewing your best images over breakfast. Dion gives individual feedback on each participant's strongest shots and discusses next steps for continuing to develop your astrophotography skills after the tour. After checkout the group returns to London, concluding the tour at the same central London meeting point.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. While a DSLR or mirrorless camera is essential, you don't need the latest flagship model. Any camera with manual mode and a wide aperture lens (f/2.8 or wider) will work. Dion will help you optimise your specific camera's settings for the best results.
Bring your DSLR or mirrorless camera, wide-aperture lens (14-24mm or 16-35mm ideally), tripod, spare batteries (essential!), memory cards, and remote shutter release if you have one. A headlamp with red light mode is helpful. Full equipment list will be provided upon booking.
The Perseid meteor shower is very reliable, typically producing 50-100+ visible meteors per hour at peak. Weather is the main variable, we've chosen dates around peak activity (Aug 11-13) to maximise our chances. If clouds prevent viewing, we'll work with available landscapes instead.
Absolutely! This workshop is designed for all photography levels. Dion will teach astrophotography fundamentals from the ground up. You'll need to be comfortable using manual mode on your camera, but Dion will guide you through every setting.
Night sky photography requires staying up late, so each day has a late start to give you time to sleep and recover. Many participants find the experience energizing! Caffeine and snacks are available. If you need extra rest, Day 4 includes post-processing instruction, so you won't miss learning opportunities.
Our Bodmin Moor location is designated dark sky territory away from major light sources. August typically has good visibility windows. If clouds cover the sky entirely, we have backup activities including astrophotography post-processing and planning future night sky sessions.
For tours starting midweek (Monday to Friday), our tour meeting point is outside West Acton Tube Station, W3 0EJ (Central Line, Ealing Broadway branch). Departure is at 10:30 am. This is due to the often gridlocked central London traffic on weekdays. Alternatively, you're welcome to meet us at the accommodation itself.
Yes. Our transport from London is complimentary and included in the tour price, but for those not near London it's often easier to meet us at the accommodation in Cornwall. Just let us know when booking and we'll share the full address and arrival details.
We aim to be back at the London meeting point by around 5:00pm on the final day, after a relaxed morning review session and the drive back. It's a long drive with real potential for traffic delays, so if you're flying home internationally, we strongly recommend booking your flight for the following day rather than the same evening.
