Our astrophotography tours are built around the night sky: dark-sky locations chosen for minimal light pollution, timed to the astronomical windows that most photographers never witness. That means late nights at ancient stone circles, misty windmills reflected under the Milky Way, and meteor showers blazing over derelict tin mines. All with a guide who knows exactly where to be and when.

Astrophotography tour FAQs

None at all. Our tours are designed to work for complete beginners and experienced photographers alike. We've had participants who have never shot at night before alongside photographers with years of experience, and both come away with images they're proud of. All in-field instruction is tailored entirely to your level.
Any camera with manual mode and a bulb or timed shutter setting will work. A sturdy tripod is essential - please bring your own. We also strongly recommend bringing your own fast wide-angle lens if you have one (something like a 14–24mm f/2.8 or a 20–24mm f/1.8 is ideal). We do have a small number of fast prime lenses available for participants to try and share, but we don't have enough for everyone. Move Shoot Move star trackers and Kase filter systems are provided on all tours. Full-frame cameras perform better in low light, but crop sensors work well too.
Cloud is the astrophotographer's main challenge - and part of the art is reading the forecast and being flexible. All our tours run for multiple nights to give the best chance of clear skies, and we plan locations with this in mind. On nights that aren't suitable for deep-sky work, we focus on seascapes, coastal landscapes, long exposures and moonlit scenes. The tour always makes the most of whatever the conditions offer.
Very dark. Bodmin Moor holds International Dark Sky Landscape designation - one of the darkest areas in England, with Milky Way core clearly visible to the naked eye on clear, moonless nights. The Norfolk coast and Broads are significantly darker than much of southern England, with excellent horizons for catching the core low in the sky during summer months. Location selection is a core part of what we do.
The Perseids are one of the most reliable and prolific annual meteor showers, typically peaking in mid-August with up to 100+ meteors per hour at peak activity. Cornwall's Bodmin Moor is one of the best places in England to photograph them. An International Dark Sky Landscape with ancient standing stones and derelict tin mines that make excellent foreground interest. Our tour dates are timed specifically around the peak of the shower.
Noctilucent clouds (NLC) are the highest clouds in Earth's atmosphere, forming in the mesosphere at around 80km altitude. They're only visible in summer, from late May to mid-August, in the hours around midnight at latitudes above about 50° north. They appear as ethereal blue-silver electric filaments on the northern horizon after astronomical twilight. The Norfolk coast, directly north-facing, is one of the finest places in England to photograph them, and the Nightscapes in Norfolk tour is timed for prime NLC season.
